Lafayette's Harbin Set to Compete at 2008 Track & Field Olympic Trials

July 2, 2008

EASTON, Pa. - Recent graduate Ashley Harbin sealed a spot at the 2008 Track & Field Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. Harbin is one of 24 hammer throwers who will have an opportunity to compete for a spot on the U.S.A. Olympic Team.

"It's such a great experience for Ashley," said Lafayette associate head coach Michele Curcio, who is accompanying Harbin to the trials. "You know that you are one of the top 24 in the country if you are throwing here."

Harbin hit the Provisional `B' Standard for the Olympic Trials at the ECAC Championships, where her distance of 209' 0" broke school and meet records. She tied for 23rd in the field and will compete in the qualifying round on Thursday at 10 p.m. EST. The top 12 finishers will advance to the finals on Saturday at 3:10 p.m. EST.

Harbin is the first female track & field athlete to qualify for the Olympic Trials in Lafayette's 26-year program. Additionally, she was the first female to qualify for both the NCAA Division I Indoor and Outdoor National Championships.
